Pre-Ballpark
The area on the fringe of the South of Market (SoMa) district saw limited development prior to the construction of the ballpark. On the waterfront there was a thriving marina, but few public amenities and limited pedestrian activity.
Ballpark Impacts
Pac Bell (now AT&T) Park opened in April 2000 and almost immediately established itself as a powerful icon for San Francisco. The ballpark development was coupled with a public waterfront esplanade, including 5 acres of new open space, part of a decades-long effort to recapture the downtown waterfront. The opening of the ballpark helped stabilize the SoMa real estate market in the immediate aftermath of the dot com bust earlier this decade. Today, the area around the ballpark is a thriving mixed-use district with an abundance of retail amenities anchored by the 3 million fans who visit the area each year.
